Just a few things..
1) If the FAA or whoever they were realised a plane with the same numbers on it existed as the one that crashed, I'm pretty sure they'd have some homeland security mob check it all out and that plane would'nt be used any more. Which would destroy any chance donnie had of returning the engine.
2) After the ending, the primary universe would be left with 2 plane engines exactly the same, what would happen with that?
3) If Frank can create portals couldn't he have just created a portal to catch the engine and throw it back into its own time? Might help back up the theory Donnie was shown all that stuff for a different purpose other then just getting the engine back.
