Would someone please explain to me the significance of karma; how it's earned and/or extracted. And why does mine seem to be dropping constantly? I don't understand!

this is kind of a mystery to me too. evidently it could simply be someone liking/disliking you/your post and "exalting" or "smiting" accordingly. could be for a good point made in your comments or for a board/post infraction, or lack of knowledge/research. ( HOW TO: under each member's name, in posts, there will be "exalt"/"smite" beneath the member's karma number. click on "exalt" to add to the member's karma, on "smite" to subtract from. only one point at a time and can only be done once per hour.) i try not to pay attention to my own (though i always look [ ]). i'm new to this myself so maybe someone more veteran will weigh in w/more info...

Here's a real time example. I just exalted Twinkle by clicking the "exalt" link under his name. The reason I did it was because I felt in responding to your post, he'd demonstrated the kind of behavior we value on this site: he was responsive, informative, kind, welcoming and self-deferential.
I also am posting to let him know that I was the one who exalted him, and specifically why I did it.
For me, that pretty much defines the process when it's at its best. And I believe the same should go for when someone smites another poster -- you should be able to be specific about why, and you should let them know. I typically do this by private message, just so someone doesn't feel embarassed or called out.
But, that's just my take. I bet others have a different and equally valid point of view ...

Basically, when you see Greedy, smite him on sight. Otherwise just exalt when one of us makes a particularly good post.

It is a weird thing and I think the more someone knows that it bothers you the more they like to de-karmatize you... I personally don't give a rat's ass
(that was just kind of fun to say) (i didn't mean it really) ;-)

What I find 'funny' is that there can be a person who only has one post and for some reason they already have -10 karma.
Their first and only post could have been as innocuous as "Hi! I'm so and so and I really loved the movie"
Then it's like someone here says... "that's it...I'm going after them!" It's quite strange really... obviously 'they' don't believe in Karma!!!!

Well, it's no big deal to me, really. Just caught my attention that my karma dropped from a healthy zilch to -8 and I was like, "WTF?!! What'd I friggin' do?" So, yeah, mainly curiosity. But thanks a bunch for explaining, guys! I'd exhalt every one of you if I could... but that'd take quite a bit of time waiting.

So, in the spirit of being candid, here are a couple of things I've noticed that might be causing people to react with a smite here and there. I don't want this to feel bad for you -- I'm really sharing because you asked about karma, and because there are some expectations on the board you maybe aren't meeting with your posts: 1) talking about Donnie Darko as something only a few people "get" ... without seeming to have taken the time to "get" it yourself 2) unearthing long-dead threads 3) asking questions that are answered under clearly-labeled threads (like "what's the significance of Donnie and Cherita's conversation?")
Again, I want to advance the level of candor, not attack or judge. These are observations I've made, but they're not necessarily right or true, and I welcome others' perspectives.
[ADDENDUM]
I'm adding to this post because, after publishing it, I was smited. Or smitten. Or ...well, I got a karma demerit. But I haven't been private messaged with the reasoning and I don't see an explanation here. Would someone like to own up? Or should I just take that as anonymous feedback that what I posted here was unacceptable to someone?

I somehow earned one...but the funniest thing is that I thought that bringing up an old thread would be more accepted than starting a new one on the same subject!
But...what I love most is that now when I have been smited I am going to take it to mean that someone is smitten with me!!!!! Either way! I am a winner!! I refuse to smite so it still ain't me!

I thought that bringing up an old thread would be more accepted than starting a new one on the same subject You're 100 percent right ... if the post that resurrects the old thread contributes something. People usually get grumpy when someone brings up a two-year-dead thread with a two-word non-post ... especially if the thread wasn't movie-related. Holy crap. How many hyphens can I use in one sentence?

Holy crap. How many hyphens can I use in one sentence? I counted....um...five... I think that is the least amount of ...'s that I have used yet! ;=)

I'm sorry... I wasn't aware everyone was so touchy about re-occuring threads. Nor did I take the time to scan through previous threads and check if the question I asked already had an answer. So... on that note, I won't post any new threads until I make my rounds in each forum. Sorry for all the trouble!
