Darko's magic - Where does it come from?
It's not hard to answer, it's the view of life. Inspiration comes from everything, it's not a question of where it comes from, just really a matter of why it's coming to certain people.
And that, I think, always more or less has to do with an abounding in dreams attitude, where emotions, dreams, the ability to lose yourself in something that has nothing to do with activity, but everything to do with passiveness. The artistic mind is not a riddle, the mind of a child, to view the world everytime as if it is the first time you see it, simply because you let no rational calculativeness get in the way of the joys in life.
For example: You might see a field of a grass, you know it feeds on the sun, and water, and that it has roots, but is that really grass? Or is that the abstraction of what grass in reality is? Every rational knowledge is an abstraction of the real world. Imagine viewing the world without that knowledge of the abstract, and seeing something the way it is, something that words can never describe.
Grass becomes as magical as life itself, so does a tree, a clear sky, a cloudy sky, a pool of blood, etc etc.
To see things rational, to see everything in concepts; i.e. a tree, will always disable you to see what it can be, as you, in your mind, already decided on what it is and what it is not.
And this ability to make sure your heart, not the conceptual mind, is king, is actual very close to the ascetic lifestyles some religions hold dear, coincidence? Not religious myself, but very much philosophical/spiritual.
After I first saw Donnie Darko, down town in my family's bar at around 2 am, a leaf blew in. I just knew this was a sign. I picked the withering leaf up and put it in my coat pocket, and proceeded to float home. The cosmos glowed like radiation that night, and the algorithm from the spiritual realm was clearly in place. I kept that leaf in my room for three days before looking it over just to laugh at it all. It was a beautiful moment. I have longed for it since...
