I didn't think that this movie was anywhere near as good as people say it is. Some people think it is a new concept but it is very unoriginal. I am sad to say that the 80’s pop movies back to future explored the effect of alternate realities better. Everyone seems to think that the whole thing was seamless, but to me it seems like Richard Kelly pick two events from different realities, Gretchen’s death and donnies death, and filled in the blanks between the two. Many of the lines in the movie seem like they were included just to fix the inconsistencies in the story. The director’s cut does a much better job of justifying these lines; the movie should have never been released in the original cut. Ever since Ray Bradbury wrote A Sound of Thunder, movies have used this concept and anyone with half a brain finds himself or herself thinking about the consequences when the topic of time travel or fate comes up. Don’t get me wrong, I thought that the movies was ok, but it is definitely not worth the hype that people give it -Matt

I'd expect people are drawn to those movies which are personally relevant to themselves or at least address ideas which are personally relevant. As such many people don't find DD a particularly great movie. There are also some people who are unsure of what a movie like DD is about, and therefore can't identify with it.
There is still the technical and creative aspects of any movie which can be appreciated without regard to the specific ideas or characters presented.
As mentioned in other discussion threads DD is/was a very low budget movie by a first time director which the internet movie data base measures as 93 or so in their list of 250 "best" movies.
Regardless of likes or dislikes DD at least encourages discussion and scrutiny of some very fine details and ideas.
Welcome to the board.#nosmileys

I try and respect everybody's ideas to my best I can, but I can't find out how is it that people find DonnieDarko to be a shallow/worthless movie. It is in my opinion, one of the best and deepest movies that really makes you think, that has ever existed. oh and by the way, I hate Ray Bradbury, I hate him. he is a crazy guy. There is just so many ways and points of view in which you are able to see DonnieDarko through. I am sorry that some people choose to see it through through a shallow perspective. I once again repeat that I respect your opinion, but you should seriously try and see it through another perspective.
Just out of context, have you noticed lately, that there have been a singnificant raise in the amount of hating-post we reicieve for lack of better phrase. I mean we recieve a larger amount of "I did not like this movie" posts. Which is weired, because if you don't like a movie, why would you visit a "fan club", but once again, this is not a "fan club" but a disscussion board and any messege dealing with Donnie Darko is welcome to be housed here.

Here's another question though. Why did you sign up to this board if you don't like the film, you can post without membership you know.

I didn't think that the movie was as good as people say, but almost all of my friends think that is was. I am intrigued by how much people love it, and I would like to find out what it is that makes people love it so much. Even though I said that I didn’t think it was a good movie, I have watched it many time, and I still don’t see the magic. I want to know if I am missing something. My friends try to tell me about all the discreet meanings, but everything they come up with I thought was blatantly obvious the first time I watched it. I think that I just don’t identify with the movie/characters enough. I joined this forum as a last hope that someone could tell me why Donnie Darko is worth all the fus. -Matt

Umm, maybe try and see it differently, pretend you have not seen it before and that you are seeing it with a fresh open mind. Accept all possible ideas and think about any ideas that occur through your head while watching it. That is about all I can probably advice you. Maybe look around this site and see some forum you like and maybe try and see the movie focused and encouraged on the subject of that thread that way you can discuss it with greater detail. I don't know, maybe this movie is not ment for everybody, but don't know what to say about your problem. Sorry.

i agree with madrid... you really have to watch it with an open mind... perhaps this may explain it somewhat better.. how many back to the future movies were there? i believe there were 3.. correct me if im wrong.. and they all had to do with the same idea right? but people still like to watch the second and third ones dont they? it might seem like they explored all the possibilities in the first back to the future, but if thats true then why was there a 2nd and 3rd one? also DD and Back to the Future are very different movies.. There is a different background in each one... It's like comparing The Little Mermaid with Jaws.. they both happen underwater, but i dont think you would say that one completely explored the possibilities the other used. i also think that if anyone can really listen to someone say something and not at least think about it at all (even if they have 1/4 of a brain) is probably in a coma.. if i started talking to you about cars wouldn't you think your own thoughts about cars too?

Good to see that South Park can be utilized in a Donnie Darko argument. lol. love south park. but for that dude ripping on Donnie Darko. I would like to also reply with a quote from South Park. "Mr. Garrison: Let's start the day with a few new math problems -- what is five times two? Yes. Clyde? Clyde: Twelve. Mr. Garrison: Okay. Now let's try and get an answer from somebody who is not a complete retard."
