Is anyone else astounded by the incredible attention to detail this film has to offer?! For instance, the countless references to life and death : 1. Owls on the fridge and in his room, symbollic of death 2. the "Middlesex Times Dispatch" 3. Donnie has no light on his bike, everyone else did Did anyone manage to notice the American flag flying half-mast behind Karen after she screams "F**k!" - it took me ages to notice it. Its things like that which really make the movie for me. I mean, the "ass-pat" and countless foreshadowing makes Donnie Darko a film spectacle. Has anyone else noticed anything great? p.s God is Awesome . . .

i thought it was great when donnie was leaving the cinema to go burn down cunningham's house and the movie name that was written out was "The Last Temptation of Christ" and it was the last thing that frank told him to do.

And if you notice and read it as a sentence, the double feature is The Evid Dead Last Temptation of Christ. Depending on your religious bent, another aspect of willful ambiguity that I find very fun. Mitch

Has anyone noticed that when DD goes to break the water main with the axe, right one second before he is about to axe the pipe, you can see frank standing on the right of the screen ... he is in the shadows and it is freaky when you see it!
jen - thanks for explaining the last temp. of christ ... i saw that and couldn't figure out the importance.
There are also subtleties like frank saying "i'm sorry" when they are in the movie theater after he takes off his mask ... foreshadowing his sorrow of killing gretchen.
also, if you listen to the jake/richard commentary, they talk about how hard it was to get the reflection of prez ronald reagan in the picture frame to the left of mrs farmer's head when she says her famous line (he told me to forcibly insert the lifelife card up my anus) ... i don't know why they needed rr's image there, but that was sorta cool ... and pointless.
well i'm bored see ya. tehre are tons of these thigns ... one more! this is kinda cute. when dd grabs the keys to drive dead gretchen to carpathian ridge (or wherever they go), right in the blockbuster card scene, there is a picture of a boy in a bunny costume. a reference to bunnies, but this is actually jake when he was smaller. this is in the jake/kelly commentary.

Watch in the Jim Cunningham Lifeline movie, as Donnie's class watches it. In the video, Cunningham pats a boy on the butt to "send him on his way", I guess. I believe it is not the only scene taking place on the movie, but one of four (four different shots taking place at once). I believe it is in the top left corner shot.
Also, about the "I know" said by Drew/Pomeroy to Noah/Monnitoff .... this short scene just shows the manipulation the characters are going through, (the Living Manipulated), as they figure out bits and pieces of what is going on. They know something weird is going on with Donnie, but they can't put their finger on it exactly, of course, so this scene shows that they are simply catching on to something that is going on.

franks apperances while donnie is flooding the school are very creepy.i noticed him on the right the first time i saw the movie and he looks to me like a life-size cardboard cutout, kind of flat but it seems to turn as donnie passes.it's very creepy and well-done.
