Question: in the end of the movie Samantha Darko is alive. Shouldn't she have died in both universes? In the original she would have been on the plane with Kitty Farmer and in the other universe she was on the plane with her mother. Why is she alive? I understand that when Donnie dies it's before all the star search stuff has happend, but then where did the plane engine come from? Gosh I'm confused.

The school talent show was just a couple of days after the engine crashed into the house. If her brother had been crushed in a bizarre accident, I don't think she would have felt like rehearsing her dance routine. The engine came fromt he plane they were on. But once time was changed, then DOnnie's mother, sister, and her friends wouldn't have been on it. |

do you not know anything... she dies at the end of the movie when the plane crashes but the fact that donnie darko went back and killed himself and then the portal wouldnt have opened so she would then survive  |

Plus everything that happened in the tangent was manipulated by some force. So who knows, maybe if Samantha still continued with sparkle motion after the unfortunate death of her brother the judges wouldn't have liked the routine and they wouldn't have gone on because the judges are part of the master plan to close the tangent as well as anyone else. Also I think according to donniedarko.com, Jim Cunningham kills himself days later. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the talent show is his idea for the youth to "overcome" fear. So no Jim, no talent show, no star search. You can tell when "God's" plan for tangent events are happening because there always is eerie music being played in the background (i.e. when Kittie Farmer is celebrating the news in the school office). Check it out next time you watch it. Everything had to be perfectly in line for Samantha and her mom to go to star search.
Lets not also forget that Donnie had "4th dimensional, telekinetic powers" as stated in Sparrow's book. He litteraly ripped the engine off the plane and sent it back himself. So no Donnie, no plane crash.

I think the plane had already broken up, and he sent the engine, which was going to fall on his house anyway, back in time 28 days. |

I really have no clue, its left to our imagination pretty much. In my imagination, the movie was full of sacrifice for a greater cause, so a few people on a plane seems alright compared to the salvation of a universe that will not be dead if the task is completed. |

Of course Donnie took the engine off the plane, thats the whole point of the movie! His decision to return the artefact and sacrifice himself for the rest of mankind! The only person he would be killing was himself, and thats the whole point.

If Donnie took the engine off the plain which allows it to fall in the portal to go back in time to kill himself, then he would be dead, which would *not* allow him to take the engine off the plain in the future... There for the incident never happens. There would be no one to rip off the engine because that person is dead. So no torn off engine, no dead Donnie. |

He ripped the engine from the tangent universe and sent it back to the primary, therefore returning the 'artefact' to its original destination (the epicentre of the tangent universe) aka donnies room.
The movie doesnt take place in the future or anything like that, at no point does Donnie time travel.

nobody is EXACTLY right. i don't think kelly even knows what the hell he is talking about half the time he tries to explain it...
but this is a thing that has been much debated... did donnie imagine or 'see' the tangent? or did he actually EXPERIENCE it?... i'm not sure if we'd have any way of knowing for SURE... but i'm leaning more toward him (and everyone else for that matter) experiencing it. it would suck if he just imagined it, huh?
what we have to remember is that no1 had to disrupt their primary paths, or leave their beds to take part in the tangent. the tangent happens on such a fast time space that it is unmeasurable in the primary.
and gretchenfan, i'm not sure if it was you or someone else before who was making very rude and stupid remarks all over the site... but i appreciate that you are now contributing nicely to the discussion.
