I think you're exactly right that the engine is initially falling in the Tangent Universe. The key, I think, is that the Tangent Universe was _created_ by Frank's return from the future to wake Donnie. Originally -- not as shown within the movie -- the engine _did_ fall into the Primary Universe, and it came out of nowhere; that's why it corrupted the timestream. The entire purpose of the Tangent Universe is to give that engine somewhere to fall from. Once the Tangent Universe is created, the engine falls there instead -- and now it's up to Donnie to divert it _back_. As soon as he does so, there's a paradox in the Tangent Universe and, being self-inconsistent, it collapses back into the Primary Universe.

what really doesnt make anysense is how frank the bunny came from the future if he was shot and killed... ? He actually didn't get shot. What happened is that Gretchen blew a bloody fart right at his face. The spray of blood from Gretchen's pie-hole gets all over Frank's eye and the horrible stench immediately knocks him to the ground. So, he was never really killed and was therefore able to travel back in time via a wormhole.

Frank saving donnie has nothing to do with the creation of the tangent universe. In "The philosophy of Time Travel" which you can read on the offical donnie darko webpage, it says that when the universe is threatened, the dead (frank) can be given powers as speakers to guide the one (donnie) that is to realign the tanget universe with the main universe. The cause of the tangent is most likely the jet engine, altough the cause of the jet engine's shift is not something that has been answered anywhere.

if you read the book, or a couple of the other threads, it tells us that rips in space time can happen for no reason at all... it was the wormhole opening up that ripped the engine off the plane. the engine DID come from the primary universe, but the moment it was taken from it, the tangent universe was created. frank the bunny did not come back from the future... the bunny that donnie sees is a hallucination, and is stated by richard kelly to perhaps be even the voice of god. kelly confirms the film is really about divine intervention, with the rabbit being the motivator. the rabbit exists in the same time as frank the manipulated dead, so he is obviously not real or tangible, nor from the future.
