First of, let me say i'm quite fascinated by the ideas you guys developed. I was browsing this place, among many others, after my first screening and your imaginative ideas really struck me. That's some excelent thinking in all directions. I was very inspired, and even slightly confused, to find myself in the midst of all the debating.
Three screening, lots of pondering and some arguing later, I think I can contribute thoughts of my own, but before I do, here is something you should all look at:
www.ruinedeye.com/cd/time1.htm
It's a copy of Sparrow's book. It explains a great chunk of film. I trust most of you already read that under one form or another, but i'm linking it just to make sure we're all on the same page (figuratively speaking that is). Among all "proofs" we have from the movie and Kelly and critics as to what is really going on, this is no doubt the most convincing.
I understand that the movie is based on a chain of events. One act leads to another, which is why Frank orchestrates it. The school flood spurs the relationship between Donnie and Gretchen--Donnie himself says that without the school flood they would never have this conversation--while setting up Cunningham's house on fire forces Mrs. Darko to go with the Sparkle Motion girls to California and come back on the plane whose malfunctioning in the air will close up the troubled tangent universe. Everything makes sense.
Except everything is still confusing. I won't list every dilemma for one because I already forgot most of them by the time I come up with new ones and two because i've no intentions on writing an entire book about this - not yet at least.
But few things that do bother me:
One - how come Donnie can't foresee Gretchen's death? I'm convinced that he can see future - to some extent at least. Why not this then? And don't tell me he lead her to Sparrow's house knowing the consequances. He knew he had to accept the said consequances--yes, that's true--but no way would go there if she knew she was to die.
Two - Do you think the Pomeroy couple--the two teachers--had any clue on Donnie's "mission"? Remember the two laughing when they look at papers and Mrs. Pomeroy mentions his name? It's like they knew he was the "chosen one" to close the tangent universe. And that was after Mr. Pomeroy gave DD the book, which can't be a coincidence either.
That would be all for now. I wish I could bring up more dilemmas for debate but the biggest of em I don't even know how to phrase or where to begin! And believe me I tried. I'm still examining Darkmystic's idea that DD came from present ans so far not only have I found credence to approve of his theory and contradictions within, but it also took me off in a tangent on various other assumptions so as much as i'd love to put my thoughts on to paper i'm afraid I will only confuse myself to death. Give me few more weeks and i'll report back (I saw the movie only yesterday). Meanwhile, a little feedback is appriciated.
Thanks! And keep up the thinking!
