I'm new here , I saw this movie like a year ago and its among my top favorite movies of all time..... before coming here i saw that alot of people had some of the same theories about the movie as i did.....but one thing i didnt see many people talk about is the whole smurf aspect of the movie.
Why would Donnie even care if smurfs had gentalia or not..... he even says "What's the point of living if you cant even F***?" He feels that sex is important to living
Donnie is obviously a virgin in this movie and he's afraid of "dying alone". I think one of the aspects of the movie is about him losing his virginity, because everything bad that starts to happen, happens right after donnie and gretchen make love....i think this is also part of why he smiles at the end....after making love to Gretchen he no long feels alone and isnt really afraid of death so he doesnt make any attempt to move accepting his destiny.

Yes, sexuality ia very important subject, because it is a part of adolescence. It's something that you discover, and it's among the things that contribute for the process of growing up, for the search of answers aiming life.
But I think it's a secundary aspect of the film. Him having made sex had nothing to do with being alone or not. Donnie Darko dies alone. "Every living creature dies alone"! The only thing that changes through the film is that Donnie Darko learns to accept it, learns to live with it, no longer fears it, because it is natural.

i believe the talk of sex smurfes and the eventual sex between him and gratchen was important in only that it kind of gave the audience the sence of an average teenage virgian somwhere inside donnie. i mean that similar to over analyzing the seen wher he touches himself with the doctor.

If nothing else its meant for comic relief.....I thought the smurf scene was great and the following scene with grandma death was funny even though it was kind of mean
