Why does it seem like frank only appears when donnie is on medicene, sleeping, or hynotized. It seems like everytime donnie is not in control of himself is when frank appears. And I know the movie theater scene disproves what I am asking but who knows maybe he fell asleep while watching the movie. And is frank dead is he a spirit or something in donnies head. And if he is in donnies head is it possible that donnie had already lived through all of that and his subconcious takes over and makes him avoid all the things that made things shitty in the first time he went through all of it but when he trys to fix them he ends up screwing up more. Whats the deal with the spiral on the jet engine. And lastly Grandma death, could it be possible she set this all in motion.

Well, the possibility that Donnie is mentally disturbed doesn't come up much on these posts, but it's there. I personally don't think he is, but, then again, he could be. He could be hallucinating through the whole movie. He could be listening to the voice of Frank inside his head. Or the whole movie may have been a dream, that eerily became "true" at the end of the movie. As for the engine spiral, Kelly states on the DVD that airlines actually put such visual markers on engines so that if they're lost, they can be identified. Peace.

No they put the markers there so people can tell when the engine is spinning.

Frank is never seen by anyone else - their always asleep. There is a benevelent force governing our lives, and if we stray from our chosen destinies (ie get out of bed and miss the engine) then we are destined to die alone. This is what happened to Roberta Sparrow, she left the church, wrote a book about her tangent universe, and rejected her "Franks" claims and thus is left alone and will not die until she sends donnie back to continue his chosen destiny. The deux-ex-machina - she saves the day and (from the darko website) dies shortly after the incidents.

your crazy i think our mayby i am donnie didn't die alone emotionaly he had grechin perhaps frank was a mental creation of his own to be sure he wouldn't die alone then when he realized that grechin would die he traveled back to die so he wouldn't die alone

Yeah, Donnie does see Frank when he's with his shrink, but he's hypnotized, as ME pointed out. Still fits in with he may just be delusional. And clearly, him seeing Frank in the theater doesn't suddenly "prove" Frank's existence. Gretchen is asleep so she doesn't see him talking to someone who may not be there. Again, I don't think he is crazy, but it still fits the movie. Peace.

hey frank is the manipluated dead, he was killed in the four-dimention and he was a living maniplulator, which means that he was there to make donnie do the right things. The manipluated dead can control the living receiver and will intervene in anyway to keep the artifact to go back to the primary dimention (aka the engine back to donnie getting killed) Frank is there because he CAN do anything he wants to donnie, and donnie is normaly in a dazed state which is when anyone starts to day dream, and so frank is there

One thing you have to remember though about Donnie seeing Frank though, is that Donnie is not actually on any medicine. The pills his shrink is giving him are placebos, as we learn in a deleted scene on the DVD. I definitely think Donnie was NOT schizophrenic; he may have some mental issues, but I don't think he's a schizo because he only has one hallucination and that is Frank, but Frank is a real person who manifests himself later in Donnie's life.
And Adam, I think your comment about Grandma Death is very interesting and I could definitely agree with it.
