a few times during the movie, frank is reffered to as G-D.
when donnie gets home, right after the movie begins, his mother is reading the book "IT" by stephen king, in which devil appears as a clown.
the two people that were in the car were frank, and a guy in a clown costume - coincidence? may be.

that's what i assumed too, but I'm not sure Frank being God. I'm also not sure what the deal with the clown is.

at the second hypno state, there are several times when donnie speaks about frank, and Dr. Thurman answers as though he spoke about G-D, and in the end, when the car arrive, donnie refers to it as "deus ex machinea", and "our savior" (of course, those could be explained otherwise, but I believe they were meant to hint both meanings).
p.s. since english is not my everyday language, there may be some spelling mistakes.

"DEUS EX MACHINEA" = "GOD IN THE MACHINE"
I ALWAYS THOUGHT.
DOES DONNIE SAY: "OUR SAVIOUR" AFTER HE SAYS DEUS EX MACHINEA?
TALKING ABOUT FRANK I GUESS.
