he said job but that was just an excuse for his own ignorance he new donnie was going to corner him and he didn't have the man parts to stand up to him Hmm ... that's an unusual interpretation. Seems to me the science teacher is kindly, considerate and actually very well informed -- far more so than Donnie is, and more than he lets on. My interpretation (and many others') is that he cannot continue the conversation because it had moved into a discussion of theology and divine providence -- topics most unwelcome and certainly punishable by dismissal in American public schools. I'm interested in hearing why you believed the teacher's response was because he was weak.

But I though he went to a private school... They all wear uniforms (not saying that secular private schools don't also wear uniforms) and theres a cross on top of the school.

But it is not a Secular private School. It is a Catholic Private School. and it is true that in general public shools you are not allowed to move into the theological/divine/spiritual area, but its even more kinda strict that topic in the school because If I remeber they were talking something like
Donnie Darko: Well could these portals erm… could these portals just appear anywhere, anytime?
Kenneth Monnitoff: I think that’s highly unlikely. No, I think what you’re talking about is umm… an act of God.
Donnie Darko: Well if God controls time, then all time is pre-decided.
Kenneth Monnitoff: I’m not following you.
Donnie Darko: Every living thing follows along a set path. And if you could see your path or channel, then you could see into the future, right? Like err… that’s a form of time travel.
Kenneth Monnitoff: Well, you’re contradicting yourself Donnie. If we were able to see out destines manifest themselves visually, then we would be given a choice to betray our chosen destinies. And the mere fact that this choice exists would make all pre-formed destiny umm… come to an end.
Donnie Darko: Not if you travel within God’s channel.
Kenneth Monnitoff: Umm… I’m not going to be able to continue this conversation.
Donnie Darko: Why?
Kenneth Monnitoff: I could lose my job.
1) He is a science teacher, so he could be fired for teaching something that does not belong to his area, and 2) He would be contradicting something or would be greatly questioning a doctorine taught at that school because it is a catholic school. I think that docterine would probably deal with the teachings that god is omnipotent/omniscent and all that.

Ah -- interesting twist, and silly me for not noting the uniforms. So if indeed he attends a Catholic school, discussion of God wouldn't be restricted ... but suggestions that His control is not complete, that providence can be sidestepped, certainly might be considered an offense -- a blaspheme -- punishable by dismissal.
This revelation does make it clearer why Barrymore's character would be sent packing for teaching outside the curriculum.

I guess that would explain her behavior or make a better understanding of it. Yeah, you got my point, and like always explained it better than me. I don't mean this as in a bad way, quite the contrary, at least that way somebody besides myself will understand what I am trieng to say.

i apologize for taking so long i have been at MEPS i joined the marines the teacher understand the mechanics and thus he can fake a knowledge of the thoery into it but when donnie learns the mechanics he knows as much as the teacher and then he understands the thoery and the teacher can't grasp that and be the weak man he is can't admit it

I think that might be somehow possible but it is very unlikely, I belive I get your point on the teacher feeling surpassed by the student thing, but I really doubt that was the case, for
1. He (the teacher) doesn't seem like the person to act that way
2. All the POTT thing, why would he give it to donnie if he really would not care or fealt "jealuouse" of Donnie.
3. Other reasons that I can not explain

Yeah, I think that was my first expression also, but either by the end of the movie or the second time I watch it, I understood it better and reasoned why he had done that.

do you mean like those ignorant/dum teachers who belive that because they are older/have more experience, they are better and always right? I hate those teachers that are always thinking that they are absolutly right and don't like it when students defy or give them a challenge. They can't cope with the reality that the student for once surpasses the student.
