I understand that Donnie chose to die to save the world, but did he know all of this was going to happen? I mean Gretchen was killed, and then the scene when he was laughing before he went to bed and was then killed, as his body was being taken away, Gretchen said that she didn't know him. Had before all been a dream, or had he travelled back in time to when the engine landed in his bedroom? If what i've wrote makes sense...

As far as discussion here has concluded, there's no evidence that Donnie died to "save the world." In fact, the reason for Donnie's death -- given that he'd already saved the world by the time the engine came crashing down -- is one of the most compelling unanswered mysteries of the movie.

please do a search emma before posting a new thread.
there is already lots of discussion on this matter, and your new thread pushes those discussions which are already lengthy and in progress off the front page. and unfortunately not many people like to look past the front page... or do searches, and they start new threads, creating a cycle.

my philosophy (i've heard many) is that donnie does know whats going to happen. in one of his discussions with professor monotouph he talks of seeing into the future. my philosophy is that he saw into the past and that after Gretchens death he wanted to change it. he told his past self what was to happen. then his past self let him self be killed. in his death the fire in jim cunningham's house would have never started, therefore the gym teacher would be able to go with the dance team, therefore donnie's mom would stay home, therefore he wouldn't throw the party therefore gretchen wouldn't com therefore she wouldn't die.

"please do a search emma before posting a new thread." - Sorry to moan but this sounds really very arrogant. Why not spend your time trying not to be annoying.

Why not spend your time trying not to be annoying. Writing an annoying (and arrogant ... and whiny) post -- as an unregistered guest -- that tells someone else not to be annoying. And that someone else was being constructive and is one of the most valued members of this community. Ah, sweet, hilarious, stupid irony.

wow, way to bring up a dead thread. anyway, "daniel", for your information... we do not have a mod for these boards. so it is up to us alone to keep them neat, concise and informative to those people who breeze right in and don't read anything. some of us have been here for a very long time and we are proud to some extent of the discussion we have made on these boards. for someone to just come in and post a thread that has been discussed EXHAUSTIVELY without simply doing a search or looking around a bit, it really is disrespectful of the long term members of the board. and the utter disregard some people have for the work we have done here does irritate us to some degree. i think what i said to emma was as polite as possible. when you are working hard on something and people keep stomping all over it, wouldn't you get a little miffed? i have certainly been a LOT nastier to other people here, but i try to reserve it for those who really deserve it. i believe, and i think i will be backed by valuable MEMBERS of the community, that it is YOUR post sir that is ARROGANT AND ANNOYING. good day.

Donnie Darko is, in my opinion, the best and most interesting film to discuss and explore, but certain members of this board seem to me as if they are on a power trip and need to feel as if they are better than everyone else. Simply because certain people havn't used this board as much as others you feel you have the right to talk down to them. Just look at the star scoring system, well done you have 4 stars it doesn't mean you can be patronising. I like this board, i think you have done a great job, but i think you need to stop acting like you are emma's mum and realise you are not. I look forward to you and your army of the biggest DD fans in the world hunting me down and slaughtering me with your fantastic, sarcastic wit.

I like this board, i think you have done a great job, but i think you need to stop acting like you are emma's mum and realise you are not. People with enough sense to behave as though they don't need other people to act like their parents are the ones likely to be treated as adults. A great deal of effort goes into this site, and what drop-ins don't understand (or, really, choose to ignore) is that their flouting of the conventions of this board make it harder for everyone -- them included -- to use this forum as a reference and to participate in this community. There are bright people here, none of whom have confused themselves for Emma's or anyone else's mom. Instead, the only thing confusing them is the fact that people who have contributed nothing choose to be discivil, unkind, inconsiderate, sometimes rude and even belligerent to the very folks who have made possible what those mean-spirited surfers came looking for in the first place. And, by the way: taking a dig at the people in this community for their interest in Donnie Darko is not just thickwitted, it's pathetic. After all, how did you end up here at these boards if not by your own interest in the movie, Daniel? To close on a positive note, yes, the folks who have worked to maintain this board with nothing but their direction to other forum members (for there is no mod here to perform upkeep) have done a great job. And, to someone visiting us for the first time, reminders to search, post in the appropriate area and to use standard English can seem heavy-handed. But they're all necessary if those visitors are going to have a place to visit that is sensibly organized and focused.

I am new to this board, but that Daniel sounds like a right idiot. I am glad you are not all like him otherwise i would not hang around long. It is an embarassment for me that i share his name. For what its worth i think you guys do a great job and i also think you are the most intelligent people i have ever spoken to, keep it up.
p.s. Is there any way we can block him from the site?
