Call the question stupid .. but what makes a cult film ? why are cult films cult ? its just something i really dont understand, why are some films cult and others are not

its mainly just indie films that are quite obscure, not your usually predictable blockbuster with millions of pounds thrown at it, that becomes a big hit.

Yeah, low budget, fairly limited initial distribution, and then it got a large following on DVD, those are the ingredients for a cult film. If it doesn't get a good following it can't be cult film, but if it gets a following initially upon release, then it can't really be a cult film either, so it's a tough thing to get right.

that makes sense, altho what about mainstream films..like blade runner. That's such a weird yet wonderful film. In one of my recent film seminars, we decided Blade Runner was cult, but is it... weird plot line and characters.. could be.

Personally, I think that at the very least a cult film's following after it is out of theaters must be disproportionately high compared to its initial reaction. A devoted fan base is oftentimes a hallmark of a cult film, but I still have a hard time calling Star Wars a cult film, because it had such a huge initial appeal. When a movie has a huge opening and then continues on having fans for years to come, to me, that's just a very popular film, not a cult film.
