A while back ago, my dad had this fascinating idea of what time travel could be like.
As light hits earth, and bounces off, the light gets sent into space. He stated that, if that light that hit earth years ago is still out there, and to be able to make a machine that can catch up to this light particles, you may be able to view the past as an image....

Interesting and more or less true (afterall when you look at the stars you aren't seeing them as they are now, but as they were when thier light left them, millions of years ago).
BUT - any machine that could 'catch up' with these reflected photons would need to travel faster than light speed, and if you could do that you would be able to travel backwards in time, in which case you could observe earth in the past directly. So why would you bother searching out ancient reflections in deep space?

Perhaps it is a government project? Heck, they pay $400 for a toilet seat. That's just a way of fixing the books. They pay $25 for a decent toilet seat like anyone else. The other £375 goes on 'off the book' projects like black ops or area 51 ;D

the damage they could do with a time machine, but if they made one it would only be a matter of time before terrorists did

I hope you aren't serious - because I could take that as astutely ironic...
