So the spears represent some sort of channel leading towards objects events in the future. After the bedroom scene Donnie stands in front of the icebox and then gets googly eyed, I'm assuming he is looking into Grechen's time spear because he is looking directly at her "solar plexus" among other things. At that point he says something to the effect that we have to go. Was Donnie looking into her immediate future? Oh, and where'd he keep that gun@! If the time spears do indicate the future, they only reach a short distance and certainly don't include context of the whole future. #nosmileys

Josh -- I believe that exact question (in those exact words) was asked and responded to somewhere else on the board ... maybe even at the head of this thread (sorry: should have looked before I posted. Shame on me).
Did you cut-and-paste it here? If so, why?

No new quote. The idea that Donnie might be able to see into someone else's time spear was a new idea as far as I know?as well as the "googly eye" comment at the icebox.#nosmileys

there was a discussion over how donnie had gotten to gretchen, had he travled through her time spear and whatnot which was quickly DENIED by yours truly. however, i don't think that's the question josh is posing.
it is believeable that he was seeing into her immediate future...
it is also possible that as he was staring into her time spear and his eyes got all "googly" that he had a moment of clarity and realized exactly what it was he had to do...
perhaps?

Right. Took me a few viewings to understand his sudden change in intent and how he knew where to go. That and the fact that he starts out the scene looking at the "Frank was here. Went to get beer." message and is next seen standing. Thought they had made a techno-error but then realized it was important. Just not sure what he was looking at until I considered that he was looking into someone-else's time spear. Not sure if it is important regarding what he saw, but rather his response i.e. "We've got to go." #nosmileys

If you go through the gretchen spear scene step-by-step, the last vivid image is that of a skull. After seeing this Donnie wants to go see Grandma death. So it seems Grandma death is the message Frank is showing Donnie there, though Donnie probably doesn't know why?? and explains why he suddenly wants to see Grandma Death.

First, apologies for assuming this question and the other were the same; again, shame on me for not searching to verify before I posted.
That seems like solid detective work from you, josh -- I will, on next viewing, take more time in that scene with your comments in mind.

I personally think that that googly eye thing was very unessesary and did not go along with the movie. I considered it a terrible special effect even if it was porpously made to look how it is.
Yet the overal porpouse of why he looked into the spear is the improtance of the scene. I agree with previosly mentioned statements that all that he saw inside the spear and the images and voices specially "cellar door", that all of that is what made this picture fit into donnie's mind and that is when he knew that for some reason it was imperative for him to go to grandma death's. I think it was in some other thread, but does anyone noticed that while the red car frank is in swereves in order to not hit grandma death, grandma death has donnie's letter in her hand. I just thought it was one of those small amazing details.
