After seeing Donnie Darko atleast 10 times, and seeing the Director's Cut twice in the movie theaters I've come to realize the world that Richard Kelley was trying to convey.
Throughout the Director's cut the pages of the "Philosophy of Time Travel" are shown upclose and help explain what is actually happening in Donnie's world. For example a page is shown explaining the Tangent Universe which was created when Donnie didn't die in when the engine landed in his room. According to the book within this tangent universe anything is possible. It is said that it can no longer sustain itself after around 30 days or so.
I'm going off of memory here...but I am pretty sure it says a tangent universe occurs when a black hole is formed. One page talks about "artifact." A metalic object can be thrusted through space/time via a black hole (airplane engine). This also ties into his conversation with his psychiatrist in that she says "if the sky were to suddenly open up...there would be nobody except you and him..." We are meant to think donnie and frank, but Kelly is implying nobody but Donnie and God. Little off subject there...
The book also talks about how there is one at the center of this tangent universe who is granted "4th Dimensional Powers." This person has great powers within their world, and it says, "This person will do anything to keep from dying." Also this person is burdened with the ultimate choice of the tangent universe...when it should end. The only way to fix the universe back is through time travel in which the event that triggered the forming of the new universe can be undone.
One of the most amazing scenes that Kelly left out was the last scene with his psychiatrist. It's after they hug and her speech about the sky opening up where she informs donnie that he no longer needs to take his medication for they are plecibos. It also shows her care for donnie in the end in that she is actually worried for him and what will happen.
Right before the "mad world" scene, after donnie dies in the end, The manipulated living chapter is shown. The manipulated living are those that are greatly effected by the tangent universe. This explained that after the universe has collapsed these people have some vision or understanding of what happened within their dreams. Applying this to the movie in the end donnie reads his letter to Roberta Sparrow ending by saying "I can only hope the answers will come to me in my sleep." After this doctor wakes up emotionally upset and worried about what has happened to him...Frank is sitting on the ground thinking about being killed from being shot in the eye...Jim Cunningham wakes up realizing how horrible of a person he is (same thing with Mrs. Farmer)...and finally when gretchin comes up to the house at the very end and is asked if she knew him, she hesitates to answer because she feels like she knew him from somewhere...sometime.
There are more pages within this book such as the connection of metal/water and manipulated dead and more info on the tangent universe's creation and destruction but I can't remember it all of the top of my head. I have to go see the directors cut again and repost. I hope this has helped someone a little in understanding what the genius Richard kelly was trying convey through this movie.
