Yeah, but the music was also picked because it fitted well with the plot and feeling of the film. Can you honestly imagine a guns and roses song being in DD ? yeah dude, i agree with you. Its a great soundtrack, score and the music. I love Echo & The Bunnymen

Would you really care if the music had been made after 1988 if it was what fit best? Seems silly to me. Perhaps not, but seeing as this post is about the music being wrong for 1988, I thought it would be a valid point to clarify.

Madworld is such a boss song, I don't consider Donnie to be the kind of guy to listen to any hair bands esp. since they MOSTLY blowed.

I think that maybe the music is a favourite of Richard Kelly's maybe or the actors? Plus the music chosen suits the film, with not many fast beats or rock, hip hop etc.

It's close enough. Tears for Fears actually were still popular even into the early 90s (Orzabal had a hit in 1992 with 'Break It Down Again') and Duran Duran were still somewhat big in '88 still. I don't think Echo and the Bunnymen were ever a huge band, they were like the indie rock of the eighties, same with the Church. A hip New Waver Listening to them in 1988 isn't any weirder than a hipster of 2011 listening to Death Cab For Cutie songs from 2005 - in other words, it's not weird at all.
A good analogy - imagine a movie made in say, the 2020s, set in 2011 - if they played songs like 'SexyBack' and mid 2000s songs by the Black Eyed Peas, it would be 'close enough' to today's vibe that it wouldn't stand out too much. Same with Donnie Darko, which is set in the very late 80s, playing songs from the mid 80s. A lot of those 80s songs got extensive airplay even past 1990 (a few even today lol).
