I just got finished watching Donnie Darko for the God-knows-the-how-manyth time lol and noticed a few more things in the movie.
The Angel Poster:
Above Donnie's bed on the ceiling where the jet engine ultimately comes crashing through there is an American flag and a poster of an Angel besides it. As we know Angels in part symbolise the journey from earth to heaven and it zooms in on the Angel poster before the jet engine falls on top of him. Being a bigger believer in the original God and not future Scientists theories this lead me to believe the director was trying to say Donnie was going to heaven. As a lot of people like to say Donnie is the Jesus Christ sacrificial character in the film so it makes sense. Jesus sacrificed himself to save mankind as did Donnie in a sense although of course he didn't have to necessarily die after the artifact was returned to the primary universe. But still...
The Bird On The Telephone Line At The End:
As been discussed over the course of the last week or so whether it was a sparrow or not birds are associated with flight (obviously) and freedom. To me there's no way it's a sparrow, perhaps it was a crow? If so they are usually associated with magic or the fantastic, which is fitting for the setting and story. Eastern religions in particular seem to view crows as a symbol of love and creation. Both Eastern and some Western religions seem them also as messengers. In Celtic, Greek and African religions (among others) the crow is also seen as a guide or a prophet. The word "psychopomp" is used in conjuction with them which means "A conductor of souls to the afterworld", could it have been watching over Donnie?
TV Changes:
In the scene where Donnie, his Dad, Dr. Fisher and his son Ronald are watching the football game, when the whole liquid spear coming out of his chest thing occurs if you watch the TV closely it changes to something else. To me it looks like the Carpathian Ridge where he goes at the end then it goes to an ocean view and finally to the sky which is shown at the end when the artifacts goes flying through like in the picture below...
A look into the future perhaps?
Owl Connection:
I noticed that in Donnie's bedroom on his bedside cabinet there is this small statue of an owl and on the fridge in the kitchen there is an owl fridge madget. Throughout the history of mankind, the owl has featured significantly in mythology and folklore. Owls are one of the few birds that have been found in prehistoric cave paintings. Owls have been both revered and feared throughout many civilisations from ancient to more recent times.
In ancient Greece, owls were often seen as a symbol of good fortune. In contrast, the Romans saw owls as omens of impending disaster.
Maybe I'm making fatuous claims but I thought I would document here anyway.
Glass Of Milk:
When Eddie Darko is watching TV with both the presidental candidates talking about Emanuel Noriega's money laundering (Tell 'Em George) I noticed there is a glass of milk on the table. The glass has blue and red stripes and with the milk (white) combined makes the colours of the American flag and it got me thinking was Richard Kelly putting a particular emphasis on the tectonothermal evolution of the southern Appalachians...just joking. ;D
And this is the lamest attempt at a Donnie Darko tattoo I've ever seen...
