Does anyone think Kelly is making some sort of statement since the jet engine falls through the ceiling and through the American flag? Is this supposed to be symbolic of something? I mean the whole Bush/Dukakis election wasn't necessary to include but I think Kelly injected this into the film not just because he wanted to draw on the period the film took place in, because there were so many references to the 80's anyway, but because he was eluding to the future state of US politics.
Or am I looking to much into this?

Maybe DD and Southland tales exist in the same fictional universe;
The Bush/Dukakis/Flag symbolism matches/foreshadows the "Choose a Path (Left | Right)" of Southland Tales pretty nicely!

It's a good question, and one I think has been started as a discussion elsewhere.
One might say the flag's most translatable symbolism is "freedom." Is the engine's fall through the flag reinforcement that Donnie is being liberated from the LR process?

the flag's most translatable symbolism is "freedom." Which is hilarious when you think about how America was built...disgusting

We shouldn't forget that DD is a social satire too.The whole 'sleep' theme throughout the movie could be a sly remark of the state of America's collective consciousness during that period. Donnie as a 'sleepwalker',is the restless individual, asking all those uncomfortable questions and getting no answers.So the flag in his room could represent the idealism of a young boy and how it came,literally, crashing down.

It all depends on how you look at it. I don't think there was meant to be any political statement in the movie, but as I said, it all depends how you look at it.

Which is hilarious when you think about how America was built...disgusting By English colonizers who wiped out the native population with primitive germ warfare? Yeah, that was pretty bad. Oh, you probably meant the American slavery thing. We all have our shit in the past.

Maybe DD and Southland tales exist in the same fictional universe I always wished that was the case. Much like Quentin Tarantino's work.

were makeing up for it now they have casinos don't they Interesting logic. We kill many of their people and take all their land, but it's suddenly even because they have casinos?

yeah pretty much lets face it we just wanted it more (thats why we won) No, it probably had something to do with the fact that the colonists had guns and the natives had bows and arrows and whatnot. Also, will you please stop being so insensitive? If a Native American came in here and read what you said, I'm sure they wouldn't be too happy.
