So go and see it (even if you feel disillusioned by the first two) - it's a lot of fun! Great news; I think I'll try to catch it this weekend. Also, Gretchen mentioned catching the Land of the Dead trailer before House of Wax (which is where I saw it, too). Who else is excited to see Romero's return "to the genre he created" ... DUH DUH ... ? Trailer can be found here: www.landofthedeadmovie.net/

I'm really looking forward to it. I have to wonder how many people will be pissing and moaning because the zombies act intelligently though (remember the whole 'But zombies don't run!' debacle?)
But hey - if Romero's doing it then it has to be right, right?

But people who truly love the genre also love to see it evolve -- just as the zombies are purported to have done between Day and Land! (I also offer Romero's official site as another place for information on the new flick and more: www.georgearomero.com/main.php)

so i went to see house of wax last night.
my expectations were not to high, due to paris hilton being in it and the reviews kinda sucking but hey! what do movie critics know! plus i'm a horror junkie and i had to see it.
but holy shit! totally blew away my expectations! it was terribly creepy and so excellent, and the wax house was just incredible. and paris wasn't even so bad, and she was even good when she wasn't speaking.
house of wax gets a big gretchy thumbs up.
AND! added bonus. previews for land of the dead slated to release june 24th how fucking excited are YOU!
personally, i'm trembling in my chair.

AND! added bonus. previews for land of the dead slated to release june 24th how fucking excited are YOU! Totally. I've spent the last hour ditching the work open on my desktop to search for articles and pictures from Land. I. AM. SO. FUCKING. EXCITED. On the topic of House of Wax, I was surprised, too. Here's the review from my online journal: Why it's worth watching: 1) special effects -- they're simple when they need to be and elaborate (and convincing) where appropriate; at least one CGI shot left something to be desired, but all in all the set design and effects were engaging, the gore was gasp-inducing and the final scene is so amazing that it will seem simple while you watch it ... until you realize what you're seeing. 2) Paris Hilton -- and I don't just mean for her prancing around in red undies. You'll be surprised at how ... well, not bad she is in the role. Yes, she's surrounded by mediocre talent. Yes, very little is expected in the way of acting in a teen horror movie (though these characters are all college-age), but all qualifiers aside, she's just fine, and not the horrific train-wreck distraction I expected. 3) evolution of the formula -- one structural note interested me: while the characters do "repeat the fatal errors of all the 'Friday the 13th' kids who checked into Camp Crystal Lake and didn't check out," (as Roger Ebert mentions in his review), the director at least acknowledged the triteness of the vehicles head-on. Yes, he seemed to be saying, they're making strange decisions -- but their FLAWED PEOPLE, people! And they were, which made their decisions to go where One Ought Not in a horror movie (the woods, the scary town, the empty house) less distracting, but which also shifted audience reaction to their deaths far, far away from empathetic. Why you might skip it: If you're not a fan of the genre (and all the gore, silliness, broken or dead-end plot lines, and other trappings that come with it), it's a good bet that watching House of Wax won't be a fun experience for you. It's unlikely that other hooks -- Hilton's role or, say, the fact that it's reenvisioning of Vincent Price's 1953 House of Wax, which IMDB reminds us was the first major-studio production in 3-D -- would make it worthwhile either. My own recommendation to anyone who doesn't classify him or herself as a "horror movie fan?" See something else instead.

Paris Hilton is always better when she isn't speaking, and the best movie besides DD has to be Sling Blade, you watch it now.

My wife was like, "yeesh -- excited much?" I just muttered at her with my eyes slitted: "It's The Lion. The Witch. And. The Wardrobe. ARE YOU KIDDING?!" So, yeah -- I'm having late night fantasies of them bringing the entire series to the big screen.

To tell the truth, Narnia looks kind of like a watered down version of the Lord of the Rings movies, visually speaking.
Not like that's a bad thing by any means, those movies were incredible.

The same visual effect company that did LoTR (WETA) is also taking on tCoN, so it's bound to have a similar feel!
