I read some review somewhere that Donnie was in a dysfunctional family. I do not agree with this whatsoever. I think that 'functional' means that the members feel and give unconditional love. It doesn't mean that they are perfect people. The one scene of Donnie and his mom sitting and talking showed that he was loved unconditionally. Reminds me of the worry of the mom in The Sixth Sense about her son. Very sweet!

Most reviewers describe Frank as a manevolent rabbit also, which is untrue.

I dont think they were dysfunctional at all.
Seemed to be a normal family if you ask me. Not every family is like the brady bunch.

People are retarded. Families are labeled as dysfunctional if they aren't the American/Cornbread/Norman Rockewllian families they see on TV. Just because a family is quirky and allows for something interesting to happen in their lives doesn't mean that they're dysfunctional.

EVERY family is dysfunctional.
there is no such thing as a perfect family.
and often times those "Rockwellian" families are the MOST dysfunctional.

I agree 100% with Gretchen.
Families, along with people, that try to be perfect are usually just kidding themselves, and straying away from who they truly are.
The Darkos may not have been perfect, but no family is, and they seemed to love eachother underneath whatever was going on, which is what matters.

Families with problems arent nessissarily dissfunctional
also any family dealing with Donnie's illness would be slightly haranged.
Also... i know this is slightly off topic but with what bigboy said at the start about Frank not being manevolent... I was talking with some guy about the movie and he said that it was terrible So i natrually went balistic stating it is the best movie ever made what the ^&(# are you talking about And he said for a horror movie... Frank wasnt scary enough! And i was just gaping at him... cos he thought it was a horror movie!!!!
The reviews and synposis and all that i think realy made people see it cos they wanted to see a horror flick. Another guy said who hadnt seen the movie but was asking about it 'Is that the one with the evil bunnie?'
Soooo frustrating!

I know exactly how you feel. It's sad that most people now-a-days fail to grasp the concept of symbolism; they would rather watch a movie for scares than story. But, I digress...
I think that the Darkos had life, but they weren't dysfuntional. Hell, if I could, I would switch families with good old Donnie. Like the OP stated, they showed unconditional love for each other, and thats a pretty decent family in my book.
