Basically my opinion is this . . .
Okay, the jet engine crashes into Donnie's bedroom. But where did it come from? There is no plane out there missing an engine, so what the hell? This creates a paradox that must be explained or the world will end.
So, Donnie is transported to the Tangent Universe, with the mission to ensure that this jet engine does actually come from somewhere to stop it screwing up the order of things thus ending existence.
Why does he die? Because his job his complete, that is what he was meant to do, he did it and therefore he had fulfilled his purpose and was no longer necessary.
I know that wasn't particularly eloquent and I hope it made snese, but I've only had 2 hours sleep so if you don't like it, allow me to inform you of your sexual orientation and which direction you can go copulate in.

Remember the "poem" Donnie read in his English class about Frank? I think Frank wanted to tell his story;to explain through Donnie (who I'm guessing was susceptible to spiritual influence) that the world needed to change. Also recall the story about the children who burned down that house... Basically Donnie Darko is a movie that depicts how life changes through destruction. Some things are changed for the better (such as that flaming homosexual pedifile played by the one and only Patrick Swayze) or for the best (like busting the watermain and laying out of school for a couple weeks). But sometimes changing the world leads to getting the crap beat out of you in a highschool lavatory and your girlfriend getting run over by the 6-foot bunny rabbit that haunts you everyday. So it's all about choices. Frank dragged Donnie out of bed to give him opportunity. Even though he'd have never gotten shot in the head if he'd have just let Donnie get smooshed by that jet engine, he was still considerate enough to give Donnie a choice... see wha-mean?

I don't think Frank was trying to get him to change the world in the way that you're talking about. The piont was to get Donnie to stop the Tangent Universe from collapsing and taking out the Primary Universe with it.
He was trying to get him to save the world. Besides, the things that Donnie did in the Tangent Universedidn't change things for good, just a little while, so he really wasn't changing much at all.

You're more than right, but I was only remarking the relevance of the whole English class calamity. Most everything Donnie had done in the Tangent Universe was ironic, don't you think?

Donnie is similar to both John as the chosen recipient of a divine message, as well as Christ as messianic savior. Once difference, however, between the role of Donnie and Christ in Revelation is that Donnie does not realize until the end of the movie that he has been chosen to save everyone. info from naomirachel.blogspot.com/2006/04/donnie-darko.html
