I know this is weird... But I believe that Roberta Sparrow is somehow the creator of this TU, not Donnie... I'm not sure, it's metal for sure; it's on the Directors Cut, go check it out.
I think that Roberta is the one who set the Ensurance Trap by standing in the road, not Donnie for killing Frank.
Also, I think Donnie possibley may have never died, of course you guys saw all the deleted scenes with him dying, but that could have been the PU, and Donnie never actually went back to die, know it's ridiculous, but we can't rule anything out.
So... Possibley Donnie survived, and brought back the corpse of Gretchen with him into the PU, which explains the body at the end.
Being mostly composed of water, Gretchen now becomes the artifact, and the FAA is just there doing their job, while the mortitians are actually looking to seize the artifact....
Rofl sorry, I had to.
Solipism at it's finest~

i think hes laughing because he just woke up from a dream and the dream was of everything that happened in the tangent universe and obviously he finds it a bit funny. you have to remember donnies life changes from the start of the tangent universe. he becomes an entirely new person. he sees things differently from everything he goes through, so when he wakes up the second time in the primary universe hes back to his old self and maybe his old self was just someone who didnt realy care about anything realy and when he wakes up from his dream of being in the tangent universe he doesnt see it the way he would have if he was the same person he was when he was in the tangent universe so he doesnt get out of bed and he obviously finds it funny. hes not the same hero who we all no from the tangent universe richard kelly doesnt realy give us an insight on who donnie was before the tangent universe occurs.

well he didn't know the jet engine was coming the "second" time, did he, because all was (re)set and well w/the world, the universe, and his mother's geraniums. he thought he was done and back to "normal" existence.
is there any evidence in the film to suggest that he knew the jet engine would be plummeting toward him in the Primary Universe?
(somehow, though, in a way difficult to explain, it makes for a more balanced, poetical ending that he does die, perhaps in echo of all the great hero journey stories...that he "didn't have to die" makes it all the more sweetly tragic.)

I think that Roberta is the one who set the Ensurance Trap by standing in the road, not Donnie for killing Frank. good point. she would definitely be part of it, for if she's not standing there, the car doesn't swerve and run over Gretchen, and Donnie wouldn't kill Frank (though he does seem very cool & composed well before it all happens, while he's being held on the ground, muttering about "our savior" and "deus ex machina". his killing Frank is another part of the mechanism moving into place...).

I suggest to you that Roberta Sparrow is in "God's Channel" and is thus inhibits one of the elements used for time travel. Whether she is human, robot, God, or what have you; in the directors cut, It's pretty clear to see the back of her entire head is composed of a bright metallic material. Just something I saw, don't really know. How about this:
Gretchen Ross is the Living Receiver Because She Can Manipulate Donnie, She Is Manipulating Many Of The Manipulated Dead Around Her (Which by the way, the term 'manipulated dead' defines Donnie more than anyone else in this movie") The Ensurance Trap was set forth by Donnie, making Gretchen and friends go to Roberta Sparrows house. Gretchen's human body is composed of water, not only could she be the living receiver (as she survives in the PU she is much more of a 'living receiver' than Donnie ever could be), but she very well could be the artifact (Whether the mortitians seizing a duplicate body brough back into the PU, or even the idea that Donnie as a product of man-kind did his best to retrieve her.
Just sparking conversation, I don't really believe any of these things, but thought it could make ample conversation.

I haven't read all the posts yet so I'm sorry if this has already been said: I personally believe that TU Donnie sent the jet engine farther back in time than originally planned, this way Frank couldn't save him and Donnie wouldn't have entered the TU because he's dead so way the TU wouldn't have occurred in the first place saving all of existence. I know it's inter-dimentional and not time travel but this would only be one more plot-hole and it makes more sense than other theories I've heard.

okay just to clear up a couple things that i think is true. first of all;
Donnie doesnt have powers! everything he did can be done by a normal person. he broke a pipe and lit a fireplace covered in gasoline. he did not create the time portal, only witnessed it. the only power he may of had was the abilty to see the time portals coming out of the ppls chest. (the axe in the bulldog still eludes me tho)
the whole reason frank is there is to guide donnie back to the original path. in the original timeline, frank didnt die, he did not get shot by donnie.
the old lady apparently went through something similar that donnie went through, thats why she wrote the book and went crazy.
the engine in the beginning is the engine at the end, not a different engine that donnie placed there.
and most importantly:
donnie had no choice in anything, frank guided him to his own death in which he witnessed, although donnie did not die in the current reality he was in. he only witnessed the death of his original timeline self. he could still be stuck in the PU he got stuck in at the beginning.
remember a black hole doesnt need to obey the laws of time. all this most likely happened in a couple seconds, but in donnies point of view, it lasted a couple weeks.

@ Jack
The Living Receiver is usually blessed with several special powers during there time within the TU.
INCREASED STRENGTH That water pipe looked strong to me and there is absolutely no doubt the bronze mascot required some increased strength... you even say that yourself.
CONJURING WATER He may have broke the pipe but there does seem to be extra water flooding the school. He harnesses the power of the sea to construct a time portal...
CONJURING FIRE Watch carefully... at no point is there a match or a lighter involved
TELEKINESIS He uses telekinesis to rip the jet engine off the plane. These are the words of Richard Kelly, the man who wrote and directed the film.
The engine at the end is the engine from the TU that Donnie guided through the portal. The first engine is still a source of much debate. It definitely isn't the engine Donnie sent as the portals only link the Universes together. You can't send objects from one point in one Universe into another point within the same Universe.

This thread is like 6 years old... but i just watched the movie for the first time like 2 hours ago. I NEED ANSWERS. here are my questions/thoughts... What was going to cause the world to end? As far as I can tell, Donnie only thought the world was going to end because frank told him it was going to. Maybe I need to watch it again, but I don't think there was any proof that anything was going to happen to the world if Donnie didn't go back in time. (aside from all the horrible things that happened to him personally (gretchen, etc)) Did he let himself die? Did Tangent Universe Donnie kill his past self? I don't think he just died by accident. Otherwise what would be the point? I thought it was interesting that when he went back in time, they showed all the happiness he had in that tangent universe (bouncing on the tramp with his sister, kissing gretchen), even though there was so much painfulness they could have flashed. It made it sadder Speaking of this whole TU/PU thing, I don't really understand the tangent universe/primary universe idea. Okay, so something donnie did created this TU (Presumably by avoiding his death when the plane engine crashed through his room) 1.) Why did frank draw him out of his room and save him?? Frank caused this whole TU, but he also guided Donnie to the ultimate ending where he dies like he was “supposed” to in the first place. I feel like frank could have side stepped a whole bunch of work by just letting him die at the beginning. Is Frank just an agent of chaos trying to throw a wrench in god’s plan for a little while, just so he can fix it up again eventually? This brings me to 2.) Donnie needed to "correct" the tangent universe by dying in order to restore it to the Primary Universe/god's plan, or else the world would end, right? The tangential universe was all a big mistake and he needed to die to fix it. But how could he deviate from gods plan at all? In order for the PU to happen at all, the TU had to exist, because Donnie couldn’t die without the plane engine falling through his bedroom. So the whole thing was part of the plan all along??? In that case there is no Tangential universe or primary universe, there’s just the universe. And god’s channel. and the plan. All the choices the characters made fit all nice and neat into the plan, like they were supposed to. Oh wait, I think I just answered my own question…Frank needed Donnie to do all those things so that the plane part could fall through his room and kill him. WHAT A MIND PHUCK I guess we’re all just little bunnies, and all we can do is hope that god penciled in a lot of sex for us when he was writing our parts in the plan. Poor Donnie didn’t get enough action before he got speared.
