I found the following deep inside a blog, a guy making his own DD soundtrack CD from the DVD audio...
"Proud To Be Loud" is supposedly credited to "Dead Green Mummies" on the film, but is apparently by either Pantera or Keel. Pantera may have done a remake of Keel's song, but the Pantera album "Proud To Be Loud" appeared on was in 1988 according to All Music Guide Power Metal I believe;
Trust me, the version of this song in the film is DEFINETELY the PANTERA version of the song, 100%. It's from their 1989 album POWER METAL. Pantera do not consider any of their pre-Cowboys from hell (their major label debut) albums part of their discography, due to their glam metal content. If you would like a copy of the song, add me on msn (email@example.com) or on AOL (MonanKeeho). It's not illegal trading as these songs are all out of print and copyright.
Trust me, it's the Pantera one. I just rewatched D.D. having heard the song a few months ago when I downloaded all the glam albums on BitTorrent. I was so ecstastic.
Okay so here's my theory and it may be way off. Keel recorded this song originally and it was subsequently covered by Pantera right? Pantera are now embarassed by that period of their career, but agreed to allow their version of the song to be used (for whatever reason) but under the provisio that it was listed under a pseudonym i.e the mysterious "dead green mummies", its possible...
Its is a song called Proud to be loud off Panters ablum Power metal. Althrough this is the bands 1st album w/ fulltime singer Phill Ansalmo, they do not consider it part of the PanterA collection becuase of its non Pantera 80s cockRock feel. So when the filmmakers ask Pantera if they cud use the song for the movie pantera said sure, as long as they are not credited w/ the song, so someone just ratled off The Dead Green Mummies, and so it was...
I think Marc Ferrari just wrote the song, or it was played live with Keel or given to Pantera because a lot of those bands got involved with the Arlington and Dallas scene, here in Texas.
I heard the song in the movie and it WAS the Pantera track, but not released - there was not a DONNIE DARKO cd with those songs, but the credits listed Dead Green Mummies - which does not exist -
so that's about right. I'd seen DONNIE DARKO about, oh, five years ago when I got the DVD (and I had to drive to Dallas to see the reissued/longer cut of the movie before THAT was released). Pantera got really dark and demented after Cowboys from Hell was released, and the subsequent albums almost turned me off to metal altogether. My friend commented - "They have the sound of Exhorder and Exhorder is ... better band!".
OK. First of all, there is no such thing as the Dead Green Mummies. Well, not for sure but the sure dont sing Proud To Be Loud. This song is on the very first album with Phil Anselmo called Power Metal by PANTERA. I have no clue where The Dead Green Mummies came from but it is No Doubtingly Anselmo's early works of art. Wish I could tell the music supervisor this but what good would it do since he claims Dead Green Mummies? Who the hell are they? PANTERA ! ! ! ! ! ! Diamond Darrell LIVES, R.I.P.
