^ there is what the artist intends and then there is what the art intends. the creative minds, of both the artist and the viewer, work on levels not always known or conscious. the character of Cherita Chin may not contribute to the plot directly but she adds or enhances an element of the story. why bother having her in the talent show, or the "awakening" scenes (in which Gretchen is noticeably absent), if her sole purpose is conveyor of earmuffs? not to nitpick or suggest R. Kelly is being disingenuous; a work of art takes on a "life" of its own in the mind's eyes of its appreciators....

watching it recently (tonight!) i again had the thought that Cherita is some kind of an angel or observer, entrusted to watch over Donnie, perhaps to see if he is finding the right path. her hovering at the periphery (not really a member of the group), her "otherness" (she is the only non-anglo besides the head custodian), her listening, all give her an air of outsider looking in. and her book w/"Donnie Darko" written on it could be a "manual" or observer's notebook (!). That is a really interesting idea, and it would explain why she runs away quickly when he sees the notebook. (or because she is embarrassed perhaps)

^well, according to Mr. Kelly himself (see reply #14, this thread), all my imaginings may be wishful or fanciful thinking. i guess it's a matter of the observer bringing to it or interpreting through a unique perspective, though w/o altering the content or intent. this was really just me going even further "out there", w/a bit of a wink.

I love this idea... I normally think of angels who have more self confidence... It just seems that with the knowledge they posess that it would just be inlcuded. But...think of all of the movies where the angels are a bit bumbling and make mistakes...
aahh here is an angel song called Alleluia by Dar Williams
It's about a boy who dies young and he meets a goth girl up in heaven, he doesn't want others to make the same mistake as he.
Ron and Nancy got the house but Sid and Nancy rule I died 8 years ago I'm still a legend at my high school I stole a Chevy and I wrapped it round a tree But that's OK cause no one's gonna make the next century I'm up in heaven now they say I'm here to stay Where the clouds are really puffy and the angels sing every day Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia, Wo-oh . . .
The cafeteria's got everything it's gonna drive me mad Cause it looks just like a big Hawaiian party that my mother had It's like the worst Elvis film I've ever seen Technicolor luau all on technicolor green There's camping trips and donkey rides and singing round the fire And they signed me up for surfing But they can't get me in the choir Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia, Wo-oh . . .
But there she was this morning getting fitted for her wings Leather boots magenta hair and saying nasty things I'd say she was an angel but it's stupid and it's obvious I said you'll hate it here cause we're the only ones like us It's crypto-fascist mania it's silicon deliria Yeah, she said, you're right, but I like the cafeteria . . . . . . . . . . . .
Hey God we're the bad kids we're so nasty mean and vile God looks like a guidance counselor God's got that smile God says, how could this be, that's really odd I guess I'll have to check my records, silly me, you know, I'm only God . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The waves are perfect and the sun will always shine But there's got to be more to death than surfing all the time I know the signs of self-destruction so I try to stop each new kid Don't be like me, forever young, forever stupid Yeah, I found love here but I'll bet you'll find it there Where they don't always make the same joke Gee you make a heavenly pair Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia Alleluia

at the talent show part in the movie the viewer is struck by this obvious corruption and conformism in the show audience when they seem bored and untouched by the girl's performance and then are enthralled by the "Sparkle Motion" crap which all represents how society is distracted from this .. life .. thing Donnie and some select few characters are experiancing......and also...where else would Donnie get the strength to put that axe in the mongrels head if he wasn't a suprehero? Kinda off-topic...sorry. Sorry i do not mean to be smart or In decent, but the last comment about him being some sort of superhero and putting the axe through the (dogs) head made me remember. Every chapter of the movie opens with a page of the book, yes? Well I think it's around about chapter 5-6-7 where it says that the being (Being Donnie) Can manipulate wormholes, whom is also given: super natural strength, the ability to see into the near future and the power to manipulate the element of fire and water, I hope this helps

Cherita is an angel. Not in the mushy gushy way. If you really watch the movie she always gets shat on and yet she never really retalitates or does anything negative, she just kinda goes about her way. Cherita's performance at the talent show is innocent and pure and comes from a place of genuine inspiration. This completely bores the crowd. Sparkle Motion was thrown together by a bunch of moms who wanted to feel important and there was nothing innocent about Sparkle Motion's performance. Also a quich side note: Cherita's performance is entitled "Autumn Angel", Cherita is embodying an angel and the quick scence where Cherita looks up at the sky after Sparkle Motion's performance could stand an angel looking to God for guidance, which Donnie refuses to do. Almost like Cherita is searching for God.

good points. there's also the book she drops w/Donnie's name on it. always felt as if this could be Cherita's "log book", in which she keeps note of Donnie's activities as he moves closer to/further from fulfilling his role (as if she's his "guardian angel"...).
