To people who find the answer to understanding life on this site:
Uh, yeah. I just realized that a lot of what I said was already posted on p. 4 and 5, I hadn't read them when I posted my last message. Anyway, I think Chris T. has it right
NEW REGULATIONS:
1) No saying "Oh. I forgot something in the movie, like, was Frank a real bunny?" or any siht like that.
2) NO MORE ON DONNIE COMING TO 1988 FROM PRESENT, Darkmystic, you have a lot of good stuff, but let it go.
Also, I do need to ask one thing, the manipulated LIVING are the people in the tangent universe, who are not meant to last, right? So who are the manipulated dead, Frank?

The manipulated dead are supposed to be Frank and Gretchen.
There are many things I don't understand about this film, but the main thing that stands out is the fact that there is nothing that Donnie can do about the things that are going to happen, it's no as though he goes back in time to change things, he just goes back to die. At no point in the film he is told he must die to save the world. I guess the "everything is preordained" school of Donnie Darko may disagree with me there. If the manipulated dead/living were trying to make the world end. Then why not make it seem like life would be better if the world did end?? ie make loads of really shit things happen to him (I know that sounds really random) Therefore I don't really see that there is any redemption for Donnie, just no way out. Does he just give up?

I think this has been answered a little bit by different people, it's about Frank:
From the second time the engine falls until the end of the movie, where is Frank? I know he's dropping the sister off, I mean the supernatural form of Frank. Is he even still in existance.
MESSAGE OUT: For my school magazine, I'm writing an article about traits in Donnie Darko that make one of the most popular cult movies of all time! (It ranks up there with Eraserhead and Rocky Horror Picture Show) Traits in it like "deus ex machina" and whatnot. I'm wondering, why didn't Donnie Darko become popular until this summer, or at least this school year. (I had a roomate at camp who insisted we all watch it). Do you guys know how it took so long it took to catch on? (I know why it didn't do well in theaters, bad advertising, but still) Let me know

more than anything Charita is in the movie to show how young people can be so mean to each other, and to be a source of admiration towards Donnie (among other things) in order to better characterize the world Donnie lives in. Certainly she doesnt have to be in the movie, but is characters like her which make the movie so great.

Certainly she doesnt have to be in the movie, but is characters like her which make the movie so great. Not only to better characterize the world Donnie lives in, but the scene where Donnie confronted her and finds her book also shows him that persons he doesn't even have had much contact to care for him and even love him, which kind of proofs Rita Sparrows "every creature dies alone" theory already wrong. I also wouldn't say that she's not needed in the movie, due to the above as well as her performance <-> Sparkling Motion performance where art gets replaced by mainstream.

the guy in the red jogger suit can't be donnie because he dies in the end.

You all have to see the movie Jacob's Ladder. I saw a post that pretty much hit it on the head for me. This whole mindfu ck of a movie is to let Donnie understand life before he dies. He is given all the opportunities of life that death will be taken away from him. Love, hate, power and salvation are show to him so he can understand the glimmer of god's plan and be at peace with the death that is imminent. i like this theory because as a timetravel story it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I mean, what does Donnie do that saves the world in the end? Donnie doesn't make the tornado that tears off the engine on the plane. And so all the things that Donnie does because of a six foot bunny do not result in the plane engine falling off. If his mom and sister had not been on the plane, wouldn't the engine still have fallen off? I could understand if Donnie did something so that it was a chartered plane, but there is no evidence for that. It seems to me that the only reason this alternate universe has been created and that the only reason the old universe will fall apart is due to this plane engine.
Donnie killing Frank or burning down a house or flooding a school do not seem to address this supposed crucial causal relationship between the two universes.
So, anyone have any ideas about this?

the guy in the red suit is one of the fa guys keeping a tab on donnie because they have no answer as to why a jet engine crashed through his bedroom. you'll notice him at the start and end of film. at the end frank beeps the horn outside the house moments before donnie dies in his room. this is him signaling that they have succedded in saving the world from the other universe. does anyone think that the chinese girl was molested by jim cunningham?

2. Why does Original Gretchin wave? Please before you shoot down my idea, remember it took me ages to type and my head really hurts now! richard kelly said that gretchen waving to donnie's mum is simply something from his childhood and dos not signify anything

The red jumpsuit guy was an uncredited extra in "Back To The Future"- check out IMDb. I suspect that to be the beginning and end of the reason for his appearance- a piece of movie-buff cameo trivia.
