the tricky aspect to the whole Jim Cunningham spiel is that there is some validity to what he's endorsing; it's his smarmy manner and mercenary ulterior motives which tempt one to reject the message along w/the messenger. he pushes love over fear yet it's all for sale. he's hawking 2 books, a line of "Cunning Vision" videos, and he'll come to your school/workplace to motivate, for a fee. as Donnie asks, "How much are they paying you to be here?"
i think also that Jim Cunningham may represent, along w/Gretchen's homicidal stepfather, the dark potential for Donnie. it can be inferred that Jim Cunningham, for all his "love" talk, is unable to or uninterested in maintaining an intimate relationship w/another adult (Rose Darko's neighbor remarks "Can you believe he's still single?"). this can link to his kiddie porn obsession, whether he's a perpetrator or not. not to suggest that this path lies ahead for Donnie, but that his fears, unmet and unresolved, may lead to a twisted walk for him too.
as far as the ultimate judgment on Jim Cunningham, he is shown crying in grief and shame during the final "wake-up" sequence. he does seem to be experiencing regret. could redemption, and reform, be possible for him?

Well put, I think we have some new revelations here, 6 years after the initial release of the film.

I seriously doubt that redemption and reform would be possible for him without really being caught. I think that people like him may have regrets for what they do but those are outweighed by the thrill of having a 'secret'. I, too, wonder if he really was a pedophile? Or did he just look?? Maybe he was in constant battle with that part of himself?
I am truly intrigued by Twinkles idea of a 'twisted walk' thay may have lay ahead for Donnie. What would have happened to him? Any ideas?

i'm going to watch agian more closly the burning of his house because in jims moto speaches he talks about drugs alchol and premarital sex i wounder if these are product he use to get through hi every day life i was having the same thoughts nearly, that the very things Cunningham condemns (drugs, liquor, sex) are what Donnie uses on his way to his "epiphany". also, and this must have been stated earlier by someone, the Biblical inferences via water/flood and fire: the flood does not necessarily wash clean or destroy but signals/heralds & connects Donnie w/Gretchen; the fire does not purify but reveals the corruption and need for purification. again, calling to mind "The Destructors", the above idicates the falling away of the familiar, comfortable, & apparently "nice". the facades are removed and attitudes/beliefs must be released/renegotiated.

In my understanding this is all there is about it. It's just a time where some of us agree to, and fewer of us actually do, watch the movie again. With how many times most of us have seen it, it can be hard to work up the desire to, so we orchestrate a time every year, though I think if we do it this year it will only make the second year. I personally haven't seen the movie in quite some time, and doubt I will anytime soon. Being able to know what they're saying before they say it and what is going to happen before it happens just kind of ruins it for me.

i searched the forum (half arsed) and couldnt find a link to return to the tangent. anyone know where it is? this is it; you've found it. it was started (thanks to Providence Portal) to encourage members to re-view DD on the same date and then post comments here, to share new observations & thoughts and possibly stir new discussion. the first date was Oct. 28, 2007, w/the suggestion to "Return to the Tangent" again each year.

i know this was about watching DD at the same time but i thought the way that scene had been written on the first page that it might actaully also be a genuine fan film that had been made. my mistake =]
