Awwwwww let's all gather around the bonfire and sing Kumbaya. Don't be grumpy, Jack -- you're invited too! That is, only if you bring the marshmallows and your ukulele; I love sing-alongs! edit: added missing 'o'

My personal sense of it (and I think, the interpretation others have settled on), is that Cherita serves as a catalyst for two of Donnie's realization: 1) unseen love exists all around us -- Cherita secretly loves Donnie, and her feelings for him, along with her innocence, become metaphoric for God's love. It's there, even if you can't see it. And thus, he's not alone. 2) his responsibility to the people around him -- his ability to influence his environment (from behaving in a way that makes Cherita adore him to flooding the school and more) makes him responsible for that environment. I belive that the moment Donnie dons Cherita's earmuffs, he has decided he is loved, not alone, and that it is up to him to save the world. It's the point at which he doffs his stupid man suit and becomes the person better suited for the name Donnie Darko, sounding as it does "...like some kind of superhero or something." wow, that was a really good way of seeing things. i give you props for coming up with that. i usually just tend to watch the movie in a general aw, even though i seem to catch something new every time. sid

I'd like to add to that: The earmuffs are practically a part of Cherita - so putting them on is a profound act of physical closeness for Donnie. It's probably obvious - but I think it's worth saying, as it adds weight to the idea that Donnie knows he is loved (and can love in return). It also foreshadows the intimacy he shares with Gretchen later in the movie (at the party.)

I don't think Donnie needed Cherita to know he was loved (And I think it was pretty obvious she did from the beginning) gretchen kinda loved him too, of course the question is how true that love really was. He had friends, family...
I'm pretty disappointed though by the directors comment of cherita-not-being-important-thing. Like some of you have said she's in almost all the school-scenes, and some of them are pretty weird, like for example the drew-scene. And that she only says shut-up. And why she runs like mad when donnie says everything's going to be ok(by the way I thought he was going to kiss her). What I think is that since we see Cherita almost-obsessely following Donnie's footsteps, she might aswell have read the sparrow-book, and understood by the things she was seeing/hearing that if Donnie said "everything is going to be ok", he was going to follow the book which probably meant that donnie was going to die. And she of course didn't want that to happen. And why does donnie wear the earmuffins? I think he thought it would help him in some way, since everything that's happened has lead him into something new. But I don't think it helped him.

I'm pretty disappointed though by the directors comment of cherita-not-being-important-thing. When does the director say she's unimportant? In an interview I read, RK explicitally stated Cherita was important -- in fact, he indicated that she may be the most important character, as "without here, none of the rest of the movie makes sense." He drew the comparison to the scene in Fargo, during which the sheriff meets with an old high school friend who, though married, comes unto her. Though it has nothing to do with the plot, the Cohens forced it in because they believed it was integral to the sheriff's character -- to something she'd recognize about herself, which would change her approach. By him making that comparison, I think RK is saying that the same thing is going on here. Which is why I believe Cherita serves as the catalyst for Donnie's transformation into his "superhero" form.

i as said on another thread i think she mayby a messenger for lets say the futre scientist or perhaps frank and she is there lets say scry always keeping an eye on him and when he tell's her everything is going to be ok she is released as a manipulated which explains her shcock and running from the school she dosn't know whats going on the futre scientist know donnie understands his mission so they let her go
if you wish to take it from the god angle she is an angle (as referenced to in her dance ((wich i thought was much better than sparkle motion))) and she is fleeing to tell gos what she has learned
but this is a flaping in the breeze theory at best which is why i chose to belive the futre scientist were using her as a manipulated

I think that Donnie in a way has a special connectin with her... Somehow he knows how it feels to be treated in such a way...I think Donnie can relate to Cherita because he is oftenly misunderstood also and labeled and shunned as "weired" and "different". Kinda like the "bullsh!t" conspiracy...

So in a way Cherita is like a physical manifistation of Donnie's anima or alter ego......
About the earmuffs.. I always thought that she wore them in order to avoid hearing the other kids insults... So Donnie by putting them he was trieng to dicipher what is the ultimate plan for him and was trieng to "shut down" everything else.

i watched the end of the movie with the director's commentary, and when she is awake in bed during "mad world", he says something about how she finally has a moment of relief or something. that must mean something, but i don't want to sit through the entire movie with the commentary on. maybe i will but before i attempt it, can anyone help me? it would be GREATLY appreciated!! I think the quote was, "When the world finally comes to an end, I hope I can breathe a sigh of relief, because I will have so much to look forward to."
