I do believe that Frank travelled in time. Didn't POTT say that manipulation of time was possible? He was behind his wall of water, water that shocked his paw when he had the audacity to touch it. That water is a key part of that aspect of travel. But, that's within the TU, perhaps the metal is only necessary to travel between the universes. Why you would want to travel to the TU I can't imagine, unstable and all.
Also, what was happening when Donnie was tripping out on water tentacles at the party and he was suddenly staring at Gretchen's tummy. He travelled through that water tunnel, right? Or did he just follow it to her with his head in the tube? I think the former.
Would the better way to phrase the initial question posed in this post be to say: he never travelled between dimensions, but he did send himself a gift from the "future".
But is the initial question about the Donnie in the PU or just Donnie overall? I think in the TU Donnie had powers...man, I wish I could watch water tentacles flowing around people...prolly why I find this movie so fascinating.

Well, "Frank" is two different entities… There is Frank the teenager and Frank the Bunny Rabbit… Think of it this way… Whenever “Frank the Bunny Rabbit” visited Donnie, did Frank the teenager, stop what he was doing, put on a bunny suit and travel to wherever Donnie was and become “Frank the Bunny Rabbit” who only Donnie can see? I don’t believe so… Frank the Bunny Rabbit, existed in the psyche of Donnie…
I think it was the latter… If Donnie disappeared during the middle of the party and the reappeared in front of Gretchen someone would have noticed… He was just following Gretchen’s path, to her…
That’s my take on it…

no time travel. parallel universes. time WAS manipulated. time in the TU is instantaneous in regards to the PU... manipulated, like the living and dead.
the water tentacle thing... he sees gretchen's water tentacle coming at him (she's coming along with it, let's remember), he drops to his knees and looks into it. he doesn't go anywhere, she comes to him. if you notice, they are still in front of the refrigerator.
RF is right on the frank part.

ah yes...the MD's can control minds, eh?
And I guess it was a trick of the camera where he travels through her spear.

No need to get nasty... Do you have any proof to back up your theory? If you do please share it...

According to the PoTT:
" The Manipulated Dead are more powerful than the Living Receiver. If a person dies within the Tangent Dimension, they are able to contact the Living Receiver through the Fourth Dimensional Construct.
The Fourth Dimensional Construct is made of Water.
The Manipulated Dead will manipulate the Living Receiver using the Fourth Dimensional Construct "
In addition it says, “The Living Receiver is often tormented by terrifying dreams, visions and auditory hallucinations during his time within the Tangent Universe.”
If you put these two aspects together, you concluded that “Frank The Bunny Rabbit” exists in Donnie mind… Frank the Bunny Rabbit is only visible and audible to Donnie…
A few examples of that… Let’s go to the very beginning, when Frank the bunny calls Donnie out of bed… Frank the Bunny Rabbit is out on a golf course calling Donnie to him, Frank wasn’t in Donnie’s room… He was presumably miles away from Donnie’s house, yet Donnie was able to hear him…
The scene in the bathroom… If Frank the bunny didn’t exist in Donnie’s psyche, then Samantha would have seen a six-foot rabbit in the bathroom with Donnie… In the scenes with Dr. Thurman, Donnie seems to be talking to Frank during the hypnotherapy session, when he said, “Frank says times up”. Also during the last few minutes of their last session Frank appears in front of both Donnie and Dr. Thurman, yet Donnie is the only one who sees Frank the rabbit…
Is that to say that Donnie imagined Frank, no way… Frank The Bunny Rabbit did exist, and was able to contact Donnie through the Fourth Dimension Construct, resulting in “visions and auditory hallucinations” on Donnie’s part…
Do you think that Frank the teenager, stopped whatever he was doing, threw on the bunny suit, and traveled to where ever Donnie was, every time they met…
Doubtful… So there were two different entities, Frank the teenager and Frank the Bunny Rabbit…
As far as Donnie time traveling through Gretchen’s spear… Yes, I believe that it was fancy camera work, and a good way to bring in the “cellar door” line, which leads to them going to grandma death’s for the ensurance trap… Donnie remained in the same place, in front of the fridge… Gretchen walked to him…
If you are going to be on an Internet board and post your ideas, don’t get so defensive and dismissive when other people disagree with you…

ah yes...the MD's can control minds, eh? And I guess it was a trick of the camera where he travels through her spear. I won't pile on, but to say: laggerific, it's clear you're bright and considered in your approach. That's the central tenet in keeping communities like these cohesive. The opposite of that tenet is smart people making quips or disengaging when challenged ... so stay with us in the conversation, please, rather than turning to sarcasm. You're far too valuable as a contributor to resort to that. And, regarding Donnie's apparent "trip" through Gretchen's time-spear: our Gretchen's point about them being in front of the fridge so far is the most compelling evidence. It context, it certainly seems to be only unique camera work, not a signifier of time travel. Is there something else that suggests Donnie actually is transported through time in that bit? edit: added emphasis on "our"
