alright.
i've been totally seduced by angels & demons and the da vinci code. i wasn't going to read them, i swear... i'm really not into the whole religion thing or mysteries or adventure stories.
but these... are sooooooooo goooooooooood. even though they are pretty much the same plot with a different chick and a different city, but i adore them. i'd recommend them just for the history, and for the fact that i couldn't tear myself away after the first 20 pages.

Really? I'm glad -- I personally could leave Da Vinci Code as easily as I could take it. Though I enjoyed the puzzle-it-out quality, I thought the actual story was not so intriguing. Or maybe the story was OK, but the writing was crummy.
That's why I haven't ready Angels and Demons. I'm reading The Talisman right now ...

I am reading The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. It is amazing. The way she writes is wonderful. The feelings and ideas expressed are never put down in writing the way this author has been able to do. It is about a girl who is now up in heaven because she was murdered. You find out right away who did it but through her eyes you see her wonderful family and friends dealing with their loss. The story is sweet in spite of the reality of it. I have about 30 pages to go and I am already dreading the end of what has been a wonderful journey.

Right now I have just started reading Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. A book of short stories by David Sedaris. He is a hilarious author who often contributes to This American Life on NPR. You would just love him! I just have to share this with you all. The first short story is called Us and Them. It is about a family in town whose father does not 'believe in television'. David, as a young boy finds this fascinating and spies on the family to find out what they do with their time.
Here is an excerpt from page 5 of the book published in 2004 by Little Brown and Company Time Warner Book Group. (so that I may quote)
"Because they had no TV, the Tomkeys were forced to talk during dinner. They had no idea how puny their lives were, and so they were not ashamed that a camera would have found them uninteresting. They did not know what attractive was or what dinner was supposed to look like or even what time people were supposed to eat. Sometimes they wouldn't sit down until eight o'clock, long after everyone else had finished doing the dishes. During the meal, Mr. Tomkey would occasionally pound the table and point at his children with a fork, but the moment he finished, everyone would start laughing. I got the idea that he was imitating someone else, and wondered if he spied on us while we were eating."
David Sedaris is very cool... ;-) He also wrote Me Talk Pretty One Day which is great!

Right now I have just started reading Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. If you like David's stuff, you'll like his sister Amy's, too. Try Wigfield for starters.

Hey all . . . haven't been by in a while. Damn Surf Control!! Only time I had to "surf" was at work. Ah well. Suppose there WAS a reason my IT staff always gave me a hard time about being on the computer so much. But, yay! I FINALLY got DSL at home. This is the first weekend of bliss. Has anyone read the new Amy Tan - "Saving Fish From Drowning"? The library has been out of copies since it arrived. I am number 3 on the list, but nobody seems to be returning their copy! It is so frustrating. I have nearly broke down and bought it, but wanted to make sure it was a "keeper" first. Which it probably will be, but single mommies don't really have the luxury, do they? The library is my friend. I just have to keep reminding myself of that. "Angels & Demons" was, in my opinion, better than "The DaVinci Code." In TDVC, I thought that the writing was forced and Dan Brown was just trying TOO HARD to get his storyline to work. I don't know if he was under some self-imposed deadline or what, but it didn't flow well. Although A&D was his novice work and you could tell he was still "green" around the corners, the story was quite captivating. So, in other words, I think you should give A&D a chance, Prov. I don't think you will be as disapointed with it.

I finished reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" recently. It's the book the movie Blade Runner was based on, which by some miracle I haven't seen before. I really liked it and found myself laughing out loud at certain parts like the shame he feels from having an electric sheep instead of a real one.....I'm not weird.
