It occured to me the other day how unlikely it would be for Frank to actually be Elizabeth's boyfriend, as Richard Kelly reveals in the commentary. Here's why:
i. When Dr. Thurman asks about Donnie's friend Frank, before even revealing that he's a "giant bunny rabbit," Rose and Eddie just look at each other, perplexed, repeating the name. If their daughter was dating a guy named Frank, the name would've probably rang some bells. Considering she took a year off just to be with the guy, they've probably been together for a while.
ii. Donnie carves Frank's bunny mask into the pumpkin for Halloween, and Elizabeth doesn't notice? You'd think that Frank's the kind of person who would show Elizabeth all of his early sketches, and even the finished mask (it's revealed at the end that he has finished making the mask by October 2, almost a month before the party). But Elizabeth doesn't seem to recognize it at all when Donnie shows her the pumpkin.
iii. I've mentioned this elsewhere, but when Donnie shoots Frank, it's about midnight on October 30th. He tells the other kid to scram, and any rational person would probably call the cops (so would Donnie's other two friends, but that's beside the point). Problem is, Elizabeth is sound asleep 6-8 hours later when Donnie shows up, and the cops don't arrive until he's gone. If Frank's friend knew anything about anything, he would've told somebody that Elizabeth's boyfriend was shot by her own brother, don't you think?
That's why I'm really not too keen on the idea. I'll accept that Liz and Frank knew each other, but that they were a couple, and were close enough to spend a year together after high school, seems like a stretch.
